Just because you is paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

As part of my MBA we had to write some blog posts, this is a adaptation of one such:

Can social media really be a force in the business world? Or will it remain an individual, personal interest?
As long as social media stay an individual interest it will remain a possible force in the business world. Let me give some example of what it could be used for.
In Norway when you want to change phone operator your number is ported to the new operator. Both operators are informed when the porting is initiated. The operator that is about to lose their customer have a short window in which to contact their customer and try to convince him to stay. In Telco, as in any business, retaining customers is important.
Other places in the world they do not have this system, but they would still like to make an effort to retain their customers. This raises the problem: How do I know when a user is about to leave my network?
Lets take a look at what we know, and lets assume we are company A.

·       We know everything about a call from and A customer to another A customer.
·       We know about calls from an A customer to for instance a customer of company B, and from a customer of company B to an A customer.
·       However we know nothing about calls made from a customer in B’s network to another customer in B’s network or any other non A network.

Instead of looking upon our customers as one big pool of individual customers we could look upon them as a network of customers with many different clusters of acquaintances. When a customer call or receive calls from someone we will treat this as a relationship between these two customers. We store and analyze attributes of this call such as how long is the call, how often are the call made, is it always one sided? When we start looking at all this data we can start making a calling profile for each customer. From this information we can extrapolate a lot of information. Calls to spouses happen very often, but they are usually short. “Hunny, can you buy milk on your way home. Great, love you!” More remote acquaintances like an aunt or an old friend the calls are much rare, but they will last much longer once they happen. Call centers or sales persons only make out going calls and so forth.

If the call profile of a customer suddenly change one of two things have likely happened.
A.    the customer is on vacation and this disrupt their normal call pattern,
B.     the customer is carrying two phones, our phone for incoming calls from people that has not yet been informed of the change in number and the competing operators phone from which all outgoing calls are made.

Ok, we know that there has been a change, should we just wait a week and see if they will return from vacation and resume their call pattern?
NO!
By then it might be to late to offer them incentives to stay with us, remember there is only a short window in which efforts to retain them will work. What should we do? We look for a caller making incoming calls to customers in our network with the same call pattern as the one we suspect is either on vacation or deserting us. If we find a new caller with a foreign number making the same type of calls that our customer previously made the probability is high that we have found a deserting customer. Now, lets just call this customer and offer him an incentive to stay. One of the companies that implemented this was able to retain 30% of the deserting customers.

Do I need to explain what this has to do with Facebook? Instead of looking at outgoing/incoming calls and text messages lets consider friends, status, comments, likes, and relationship information on Facebook.
When you click become a fan of a company what happens? It is almost the same as becoming a friend of the company. Friends we know, have access to a lot of our information on Facebook. Consider for a moment if we could figure out which customers were about to desert us based on incoming calls think what can we discover from analyzing your friendship relationship, your status messages, your comments, your likes and so on? But hold on a second, what information is available to me about the friends of my friends? A lot?
Maybe a policy of non-sharing is not so bad after all.

How can Microsoft overtake Google in search? Is search a winner-take-all business?

For my executive MBA we had to write short blog post, this is a adaptation of one such:

How can Microsoft overtake Google in search? Is search a winner-take-all business?
These are two interesting questions from a users perspective. It is in Google’s interest to keep Microsoft focused on them as well, because Google have an advantage in the search business. I believe that the questions are the incorrect question to ask both from Google and Microsoft’s perspective. The correct questions are (IMHO): How can Microsoft overtake Google in the advertisement market? Is the (online-)advertisement market a winner-take-all market?

Search is just a means to an end. The end goal is to tap into the revenue potential of advertisement. To capture revenue in this market Microsoft can try to capture a larger portion of the search and this is what they have tried for some time. They can conceivably compete with Google as long as they manage to deliver the same perceived quality and are able to also capture the advertisement revenues. In the straight forward “googeling” business Google has several advantages: They are the market leader, the are better able to capture advertisement revenue, “googelig” is their core business and they have significant resources they can use to defend their position, and finally they are good at innovation.

An option for Microsoft is to try to redefine search in order to level the playing field, or maybe even capture the high ground. Or they could attempt to carve out a niche market in search that they are better able to serve than Google.

In the end both these alternatives boils down to how can Microsoft capture advertisement revenue from Google. It begs the question; is search the correct arena? Can Microsoft in the future redefine the advertisement market to something better suited to their core competencies? It will not be easy and some will say it is impossible. Predicting what will happen in the technology arena has countless examples that some people have done what most people thought impossible. The question that remains to see if Microsoft is some people or if they are just like most people.

Slicehost

People always write long blog posts when they are angry or dissatisfied with the service received. So I though I should do the opposite.

I had lost my root password at my slicehost. Thinking this would be a lot of hassle getting it back. I contacted suport 11pm on a friday (my local time). Assuming this would take a while. 2 minutes later I had an e-mail in my inbox. I figured it was just an autoreplay telling me they had received my support request. That was not the case. It contained instructions on how to recover it.

Yet again I'm a happy customer of slicehost.com

OBIEE 11g: Import metadata, connection problems.

Importing metadata aught to be a simple: Hit File - > Import Metadata, punching in db and user name and finish it of with password then select what you want to import. It is if your lucky. The pitfall that got me was that OBIEE 11g install it's own Oracle client.
Fine, so what? It is in this clients tnsnames.ora that it looks up servicenames. Which means that you have to have the correct tnsnames entries in {Oracle_BI1}\network\admin\tnsnames.ora and not that of your database.

OBIEE 11g the first disappointment.

After about an hour of fiddling about and reading documentation I finally got the OBIEE 11g image to work. Even before I log into analytics I meet my first disappointment. Really it is a very small thing, but still annoying that they haven't fixed it.

So here it goes. When you come to the login page, you naturally start filling it from the top towards the bottom. So you enter user id and password. Then you notice that the server has a different default language than what you prefere. So you switch from default to what ever your preference is. The problem is that this trigger a reload of the page, so that your user id and password field is empty and you have to fill it out again. This is the kind of things that annoy user, and it is a bad first meeting with a product.

XE and Apex on a Slicehost

For a while I have considered getting a hosting service for my apex applications. The community have made a list of some of the providers. All of them charge depending on the amount of storage capacity that you need. They have a fairly high monthly rate compared to the amount of storage. For instance htmldb-hosting.com charges $32/month for 50MB and $140/month for 500MB.

Previously I have looked into just renting a server and installing a oracle express edition on it. In the past I have had some trouble with it, as the OS provided was not the easiest to install XE on. However, Slicehost have now upgraded their selection of OS and I give it another go.

I chose to get a 15GB storage, and 384MB of memory slice. It will cost me $25/month. In order to avoid any unplesant experienced a I added a backup for $7.5. When this is installed I'll be able to use up to 4GB of storage in Apex (limited by the XE edition), and I'll still have 5-10GB left on the server that I can use for other purposes.

Installation process.

Get a slicehost, chose Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit OS. Shortly after this is done you'll get an e-mail with the root password and the IP of your new server. You can log in using a web console on slicehost page or use ssh.

After logging in to the new server:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/swap.img bs=1M count=780
mkswap /mnt/swap.img
swapon /mnt/swap.img

vi /etc/fstab
add the following line
/mnt/swap.img none swap sw 0 0

vi /etc/apt/sources.list
add the following line:
deb http://oss.oracle.com/debian unstable main non-free
Run
wget http://oss.oracle.com/el4/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle  -O-
| sudo apt-key add -
apt-get update
apt-get install oracle-xe
You now got a oracle user and a running XE database. If you need to upgrade apex you can use the following guide.

OWB 10.2.0.4 outer join PEBKAC fix

Looking at a join Mr. someone-else had made in a OWB mapping I found the following conditions:
a.column1 = (+) b.column1 AND
a.column2 = (+) b.column2
Noway this can work! However the mapping was running smoothly. OWB actually changes the place of the (+) to the correct location when generating the SQL so that the final statement looks like:
a.column1 = b.column1 (+) AND
a.column2 = b.column2 (+)
I was totally amazed by this.

OWB 10.2.0.4 joiner errors

Deleting a in-group in a joiner
If you have a joiner and for some reason has to delete one of the in groups OWB can corrupt the join conditions. After a delete the columns in the conditions have moved around or been substituted for other (apparently random) columns. If not corrected manually afterwards this will cause you trouble.

java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: -1
When deploying a mapping you might get the following error
VLD-1141: Internal error during mapping generation.

java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: -1
at oracle.wh.service.impl.mapping.component.JoinSqlDelegate.prepareOutputContext(JoinSqlDelegate.java:530)
at oracle.wh.service.impl.mapping.generation.WBMappingGenerator.generate(WBMappingGenerator.java:239)
at oracle.wh.service.impl.mapping.generation.PlSqlGenerationMediator.assembleSetBasedInternal(PlSqlGenerationMediator.java:2150)
at oracle.wh.service.impl.mapping.generation.PlSqlGenerationMediator.assembleSetBased(PlSqlGenerationMediator.java:2132)
at oracle.wh.service.impl.mapping.generation.PlSqlGenerationMediator.assemble(PlSqlGenerationMediator.java:554)
at oracle.wh.service.impl.mapping.generation.WBMappingGenerator.generate(WBMappingGenerator.java:807)
at oracle.wh.service.impl.mapping.generation.WBMappingGenerator.generate(WBMappingGenerator.java:334)
at oracle.wh.service.impl.mapping.generation.WBDeployableMappingGenerator.generate(WBDeployableMappingGenerator.java:104)
at oracle.wh.service.impl.generation.common.WBGenerationService.generateCode(WBGenerationService.java:433)
at oracle.wh.service.impl.generation.common.WBGenerationService.generateCode(WBGenerationService.java:311)
at oracle.wh.service.impl.generation.service.WhValidationGenerationTransaction.run(WhValidationGenerationTransaction.java:251)
This happens if you have a join condition referencing outgrp1. Why would you reference outgrp1 in a join statement, you wouldn't. However if your deleting one of the in-group, in particular the last in-group, Oracle might insert outgrp1 as part of the join condition. If you get this error start by looking through all your join conditions to see if Oracle have messed one up.

OracleXE and Apex 3.2 on Ubuntu 9.0.4

Introduction
I'm a huge fan of Apex. It is a very quick and good way to develope data driven applications. With it you can make extreamly affordable applications. Especially if it is compined with OracleXE and a free of charge Linux like Ubuntu. This is what I'm going to do in this short how-to. I'm going to install OracleXE (10g) on Ubuntu 9.0.4. Apex is bundled with OracleXE, so no installation is needed for that. How ever I'm going to upgrade the Apex installation from 2.1 to 3.2

Requirements
First of all you need 32bit os. Install Ubuntu 9.0.4, the desktop version. I had some problems in previous version of Ubuntu with the server release in regards to OracleXE, thats why I'm using the desktop version. Just make a default installation. I did mine on VmWare, running of my Windows XP gaming pc.

Then grab Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (Universal), Download oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb from oracle.com. For the uninitiated this is Oracles free database. You can use it with 1gb memory, 1CPU and 4gb of data for (almost) any purpose free of charge. The full lisence can be found her.

Get Apex 3.2 for oracle.com

Installing OracleXE
sudo aptitude install libaio1
sudo dpkg -i oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb
When running the above the installer might abort and say that you do not have enough SWAP. If it does run the following four lines. Where 700 is changed for the amount of SWAP you are missing.
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/SWAP.img bs=1M count=700
sudo losetup /dev/loop7 /SWAP.img
sudo mkswap /dev/loop7
sudo swapon /dev/loop7
Note that after the first reboot this SWAP image is no longer going to be used, which is fine. We only need it during the install. However, ff you want to keep it you either have to add it in fstab or run the following after each boot.
sudo swapon /dev/loop7
When then installer finishes it tells you to run the post install, do that:
sudo /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure
It will ask you a bunch of question, if your unsure of the answer just hit enter and you'll get the default. Well you need to enter a password though.

http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex is usually the url for your new database. From this web interface you can manage some aspects of the database, but I'm a sqlplus fan. Note the 127.0.0.1 address is only valid from your computer. If you need to reach the database from a different computer substitute 127.0.0.1 for the ip or domain of your computer where OracleXE is running.

Note that the installer created a database with SID = XE for you. This might come as a surprise to some experienced DBA's as Oracle usually does not do this. You have to do it your self after the install.

Upgrading Apex 2.1 -> 3.2
Unzip the software you downloaded from Oracle.com
unzip apex_3.2.zip
sudo mv apex /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/
sudo chown oracle:dba -R /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/apex
The installer for the databse created a oracle user, so lets login with it and get sqlplus working:
sudo su - oracle
Set the path and oracle environment variables:
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin/
export ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server
export ORACLE_SID=XE
It's time to upgrade apex. When you installed OracleXE it came with a apex installation, but we want to have the newest, Apex 3.2.

This will take hand of the pre-install requirement:
cd /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/apex
sqlplus / as sysdba
ALTER SYSTEM SET SHARED_POOL_SIZE='100M' SCOPE=spfile;
shutdown immediate
startup
@apexins SYSAUX SYSAUX TEMP /i/
The last line starts the update scripts. It will run for a while, so be patient.

Since we are running apex on OracleXE we have to do a couple of special steps, these are the ones below. Note that password should be substituted for what ever you want the admin password to be.
@apxchpwd
@apxldimg.sql /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/
@apxxepwd.sql password
If you want your applications to be available from other computers run:
exec dbms_xdb.setListenerLocalAccess(l_access => FALSE);
There are a few more settings you might want to change, they can be found her.

The administration page for your apex can be found at: http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/apex_admin

Username is admin, and password is the one you sett when runing @apxchpwd

The application interface that user are going to use when developing applications are at:
http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/apex

When the application is done the final applications will be available at:
http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/f?p=#APPNUMBER#
Where #APPNUMBER# is the number of the application, for instance 100, http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/f?p=100

Flickr

I got my self a Flickr account. I was told it was easy and fast to upload, and for just $24 a year I could store unlimited amount of images. This sounded great, just what I need. I need backup of all my images, it is probably around 100GB.

It's far from perfect, it needs more features like:
  • An upload agent that will retry upload when they fail.
  • An upload agent that remember where it was if it crashes or the computer goes down.
  • A system for removing, or better merging duplicate images. It should do a search if the image has the same image name and size it is probably the same image. It should show a list of all these for you to check and the merge tags, comments and set membership and finaly remove the duplicate.
  • Better access controll. You should be able to have a list of all images visible for family, or public. And it should be able to grant access to individual people.

Downhill

When I was younger, half a lifetime ago, I used to go with my parents on Easter vacation. During these vacation we would always go downhill skiing. Next week I'll be going to Chamonix with my company to ski for five days. Naturaly I was a bit nervous about skiing for the first time in 15 years. So I went to the local resort to test my skills. To my delight it was like riding a bike....

I'm realy looking forward to the trip, I'm sure it will be awesome.

Garmin Nuvi 760

I or we, bought this a few months back. After a few days I regretted not buying a TomTom instead. Yes the Nuvi gets me most places I want to go. It is easy to add locations to a route and such things. But I haven't found any way to customize it. I hate that when it is in navigation time it shows when I will arrive and not the number of minutes or km left. Which is very annoying since I do not have a watch in my car.

Pluming

Friday morning, last week, the drain on my bathroom clogged. I tried to fix it, digging out large amount of icky junk from the drain, but it stayed clogged. The janitor told me that it was likely a small pipe between the drain and some larger pipe that was clogged. He told my i could access this pipe from the drain, if I could only unfasten a bolt. I had to disassemble the sink and the closet to get at the bolt. While trying to unfasten it, the wrench slipped and I hit my hand with all my "might" on a sharp metal edging around the drain.

I visited the emergency room ('Legevakten') and got my hand stitched. Two stitches inside the wound, and three to close the wound. The doctor told me that there would be absolutely no diving for the next three weeks, dry gloves or not. I got no painkiller or information of any kind, was just discharged. Over the week I visited Legevakten again two more times, because the hand had swelled and the non-prescription painkillers weren't working. The end of it was that I had to stay home from work for two days on sick leave. Wednesday I was back in the office. It was painfull to use the keyboard and mouse. However, Thursday things were much better. I just hope i will have full use of my hand to before the Tea presentation on the 8th of November.

New York City

I was allowed to attend ETL Architecture in Depth (ETLD) at Kimball University in New York City. This was my first trip to USA.

The Course
Before leaving home I received a list of topics that I should understand before attending the class. It came with a suggested reading list. I did review all the topics in advanced and had high hopes that they would waste no time on them. In previous courses I have attended they have spent too much time on the basic and the things they say they require you to know in advance, unfortunately this was the case here to. Aside from that it was a very very good and interesting course. Everything from the class room to the teaching material was very professional and well functioning. The teachers Ralph Kimball and Bob Becker were excellent teachers.

The Liberties
Since 911 USA has been all about security, security and security. At leas this is how it seems to me. My trip to the Liberty Island confirmed this.

I jumped on the subway and got down to battery park, it was a Saturday morning. In the park there was a assembly of some kind, I did not get why their were assembled only that the Empire State Building would light up in a certain way to acknowledge their assembly/march or what ever.

At the dock I bought a ticket $12 for the boat. Off course there there was a security tent, and a good amount of fences to lead the potential queue into the tent. On the tent wall there's a sign telling me what I may not bring to the island. No firearms, for a Norwegian like my self this 'duh of course your not bringing a gun,' but it is probably unconstitutional around here. No packs, no suitcases, but bags and backpacks were ok. What is the principle difference between a pack and a backpack security wise, well it beats me. Luckily I decided to pack my stuff in a backpack for the day.

Inside the security tent it is the usuall airport deal, remove your belt and jacket, empty your pockets. Have your stuff x-rayed or what ever, while you pass through a metal detector. If your reall "lucky" you get padded down by the mean looking security guy to...

I was happy when that was done with, now I could enjoy my trip to the Island in peace. From the boat you had perfect view of the statue and the island, I guess seeing it in much the same way the emigrants saw it a hundred years ago. Unfortunately I accidentaly switched my camera to 1600 ISO, so the images are all bad... I noticed it before returning from the Island so I got a few nice images.

I had heard that you no longer could enter the statue because of security. But was somewhat surprised to find yet another security tent just in front of the statue. Apparently you had to have a special ticket to get in to the pedestal, and pass through this second security tent. I do not know how it happened but I had such a ticket. After disposing of my bag in a fingerprint locked locker I entered the security line. From the sign at the entrance I could see that even with the special ticket you were not guaranteed to be able to enter the pedestal. If you wanted to be sure you had to make reservations one week in advance online!! Anyhow I got in.

Inside the security tent there was a large room for queuing, and a more or less sound proof door into another room. A few people at the time were let through the door, and when the door opened to let those people through you could here a hissing sound as if gas was being released. Had I signed up in the Auschwitz line? Entering the second security room I discovered that it was only an air puffer. You had to stand in this large machine while it blew air on you. Meanwhile your jacket, belt and other stuff was x-rayed again. Finaly I could pass out of the air puffer and in to the metal detector.

Well through that heardel I decided to take the stairs to the top. 160 steps, later I came to a small square room. There was a security guy there informing me that for security reasons I would not be able to climb up any furthere. I had to wonder what they thing I had gotten past the two security checks, and not to mention the air puffer. From the small room I exited out to the top of the pedestal, where the view of Manhattan skyline was fabelous. I wish I could see it from the top of the statue....

The other Sights
Broadway and 5th avenue
They are very very long and crowded. But walking them you can see a lot of nice buildings, and shops.

Times Square
Acutally it is quite small and asside from the multitude of neon images it's not very impressive.

Empire State Building
The view from 86th floor was amazing. The 102nd floor was closed, renovation or security? Anyway it is well worth the price to view Manhattan from above.

Central Park
I had expected it to bee somewhat like Hyde park in London, which it does not resemble at all. Central Park is a man made environment made to be like a forest with lakes an walkways. The most amazing thing about it was how silent it was just a few meeters in compared to the streets.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
It's huge, and had lots of nice things to see. The collection included among other things a large Egyptian collection featuring a temple. I found lots of artifacts from Roma, Greece as well as japanese. Unfortunately I could find no tea items.

Wallstreet
It's a street not that much to see.

United Nations
Unless you come during the week when there is a guided tour there is not much to see. I was only able to enter the loby and the gift shop in the basement.

Favorite quote
Two ladies were arguing at the subway station. One was standing in the way for the other to pass out of the station, when this one woman said:

Stupid, stupid miss.
I love the way she was rude an polite at the same time.

Images
I took a few images during my stay, actually I took a lot less images than I usually does. I just have to admitt that I find older buildings way more facinating than tall buildings. Not to mention that it is much harder to take nice images of the tall ones. Some of the images can be found here.

Riga

Jan, Anne's father, invited his wife, his daughters and their boyfriends to a trip to Riga. He wanted to have a trip with his family to celebrate his sixtieth birthday. I was very fortunate to be invited. It was a awsome trip. Riga surprised me as a city, it had a lot of things to see and do. The best part was that it was all gathered in a very small area.

The highlights
  • The Black Head House, a fraternity for unmarried men. The house has a lot of things to look at.
  • The market located in the old Zeplin hangars. Mostly food, but it is nice to see.
  • Tower of St. Peters Church, 72m above the old city it offers a magnificent view.
  • Rozengrals, a restaurant that has a medieval team. The waiters wear costumes, they have live music, the resturant is in a old cellar with authentic looking furniture, just awesome. It is in Rozena Iela
  • Black Magic, a nice café.

Wine trip to Lucca, Italia

I have just returned from a fantastic trip to Lucca in Italy. My girlfriend and I went together with ErgoVin, the wine club at my previous employer. I should probably say that I went with people from the wine club and not the club, as that is more accurate.

We traveled with Norwegians flight from Oslo to Pisa early in the morning. Left our homes at around 04:00. We had originally booked a later flight, but it was moved forward. Which in turn allowed us some time in Pisa before our scheduled program started. In Pisa we saw the famous tower, then left for Lucca.

Lucca is a fabulous town, at least the old part. It is surrounded by a high wall, which you can walk/jog/bike on top of. It has lots of old building and narrow winding streets. Almost at every street corner there is a restaurant with a great atmosphere and serving wonderful Italian food. I could get used to the four course (antipasti, primi, secundi and desert) meal not to mention the wine...

We hired a Norwegian living in Lucca had arranged the entire trip for us. Everything from booking the hotel, making reservations at restaurants and planing wine tastings. The entire deal was perfect for us. (I'll try to get his contact information and put it her.)

Saturday we went to Greve, a town in the Cianti wine district. There we visited a large wine shop. In this shop they had lots of wine dispensing-wending-machines. By inserting a pre-payed card you could get wine. It was a fun experience. I wish Vinmonopolet could have the same system, so that you could buy (and taste) a smal quantity of a wine before deciding if you wish to buy a bottle. After Greve we went a short while to a vinyard where we had lunch and looked at the production facilities.

Sunday we went to a huge villa where we could relax by the pool and learn to cook Italian food. This was a great experience. It is possible to rent rooms in the villa, he has sixe double room and one single, all cost 120€. I wish I could have stayed at the villa longer, and learned more about Italian cooking. We learned to make pasta and a few other things. I enjoyed learning how to make pasta. When I returned to Oslo I immediately bought a pasta roller for my KitchenAid.

We left from Firenze with a Sterling flight since that was a lot cheaper than returning with Norwegian. For the first time in a while I arrived back at reasonable time (16:40), and had time to train (yes I have started training at Sats) and fix a few things the same day.

New Car

For a while I have been wanting a car. My last car was demolished after my sister borrowed it. To be fair I should probably mention that three drivers hit her in less then 30 minutes. When I started looking at cars I intended to buy a relatively cheap car. Because of taxes, it is a lot cheaper to buy a car with only two seats than one with more. So I was looking at models like Citroen Berlingo and Toyota Yaris. After discussing it over with my girlfriend, we decided that it would be nice to get a car together, since neither of us expect to use it that much. She had several wishes, one of which was that the car had to have at least four seats.

One Saturday morning I looked at a very nice Nisan Patrol, it was awesome to drive. Seated high, and with huge windows where you had extremely good overview of the traffic. 2.8 liter, 6 sylinders engine and 4x4 gave you a lot of power to play around with and that was the problem. This was a car to play in. It was expensive to buy, expensive to drive (1.2l / 10km) and expensive to insure. Well, we had one more car to look at that day, even though both my car-shopping-assistant-family-members and me agreed that this would be a nice car (and almost within our price range), even my girlfriend liked the car, although she had never seen it.

Like I said, we had one more car to look at that day, it was 100km outside the city, a bit further than we had anticipated. Anyhow, we arrive to find the Skoda Octavia TDI1.9 in good shape. The day before we had tried a similar car, with 4x4 and 90 horse powers, as opposed to this car with two wheel drive and 110 horse powers. After driving it for a while, the decision was clear that this was the economic choice to make. I felt like I took one step in the direction of "family father" when I bought that car.... a tool and not a toy.
I brought the car home that same day. Later that evening my girlfirend saw the car for the first time, the car that she had just bought half of. Fortunately, it met with approval. A few days later the car was insured, to my surprise I had 60% bonus from my last car, which was increased to 70% since I had owned the other car for more than 6 months with 60% bonus. I felt very lucky that I got the high bonus and having found the cheapest insurance.

The day after I a small crack in the winshield. The crack grew over the next day until it was about 40cm long. Fortunately, I got the insurance with extra coverage to cover shit like this, and talking to the people that will change the windshield, I realized that by having this insurance I just saved the total insurance fee for the next year.
